Castles & Fortresses
Romania has been subject to numerous battles throughout the ages, with many of its regions being conquered and reconquered. This has led to the construction of several castles, fortresses and overall defensive lines.
The highest number of defensive constructions are in Transylvania, and to this day they are one of the main features of the region. More than once they have protected the local people from the invading armies, and now it's the turn of the locals to protect them as part of the national patrimony.
Some of the best-known Romanian castles are Bran Castle, also known as Dracula's Castle, Corvin Castle, and Peles Castle, the former summer residence of the Romania Royal Family. Besides that, Romania is also home to the last inhabited forest in all of Europe, Sighisoara.
