Peles and Bran Castle
Your day trip from Bucharest to the stunning Peles Castle and Bran Castle starts in the morning when you will meet with your guide at the hotel. You will head to Sinaia, a small mountain resort in the Carpathian Mountains, by driving through Romania’s key destination for winter sports lovers, the scenic Prahova Valley. Our first visit will be at the Peleș Castle, the splendid royal castle, built by the first king of Romania, Carol I of Hohenzollern. Next on our itinerary is Bran Castle, one of the most famous castles in the world, also known as Dracula’s Castle. Our day trip continues with Brasov, a popular destination in Romania among the tourists. The city was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211 and it exudes a distinct medieval ambiance. Walking through the Council Square, we will reach the Old Town Hall situated right in the center, and afterward, we will visit the Black Church, the biggest religious building of its kind between Vienna and Istanbul.
The Peles Castle
The castle was chosen to be the summer residence of the royal family. It was built in the 19th century, according to the specifications of King Carol I, combining German and Italian neo-Renaissance styles. Its beautiful 160 rooms were each furnished to reflect a different European country. The estate was used as a private retreat for statesmen from the entire world. Among the personalities that visited the Peles Castle are the American president Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi and PLO leader Yasser Arafat.
The Bran Castle
The castle, set atop a 60-meter cliff, was built in the 13th century and it owes its fame to the myth created around Bram Stocker’s character, Count Dracula. The rooms of the castle are connected through narrow stairways and underground passages which contribute to the eerie atmosphere of the castle.
The Black Church
This Gothic style church set in heart of Brasov has a troubling history: it was built on the site of an old church which was destroyed by the Mongol invasions in 1242. In the 17th century, the church was stoked again by disaster in the form of the “Great Fire” which destroyed the city along with the church. The walls of the sanctuary turned black and it was given its current name.
