  1. Day 1 Arrival in Maramures and trip to Breb village

Discover Maramures in a two-day tour from Cluj Napoca and enjoy a unique experience in the place considered the heart and soul of rural Romania.

This two-day tour perfectly blends the picturesque landscape and its virgin forests with rural experience, history, and religion. The tour is specially built to put nature, tradition, and the people of Maramures first, while also satisfying your curiosity for culture, food, traditions, nature, and architecture.

To begin this adventure from Cluj, you will be picked up from the hotel by your tour guide, and then we take a road trip to Maramures, the region that kept its traditions alive for such a long time.

Our destination of the day is Breb, one of the most traditional villages in Maramures, that was first mentioned in documents in 1715. You will take a walking tour through the village, enjoy a traditional lunch and spend the night in a beautiful traditional hotel.

  2. Day 2 Merry Cemetery and wooden churches of Maramures

Throughout the tour, you will discover the hospitality of the local people who will warmly welcome you into their homes for a traditional meal with the freshest products the land has to offer, and, of course, a local drink, palinka.

The people of Maramures never let a guest leave their house with an empty stomach, so prepare yourself to eat some of the best home-cooked meals in the world!

Next up you will visit one of the most peculiar cemeteries in the world, the Merry Cemetery. Local craftsman and wood carver Stan Ioan Pătraș sculpted the first tombstone in 1935 gave birth to this tradition, and today the cemetery is filled with more than 800 colorful wooden crosses, with epitaphs just like this one.

    “Underneath this heavy cross
    Lies my poor mother-in-law
Three more days she would have lived
I’d be here and she would read
You, who here are passing by
Not to wake her up please try
Cause if she comes back home
    She will criticize me more.
    But I will surely behave
So she’ll not return from grave
    Stay here, my dear mother-in-law!”

Next, we will see the religious side of the people from Maramures, by visiting some of the most beautiful churches in Romania, included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We will admire two of the Wooden Churches of Maramures, Poienile Izei and Barsana, built and carved by local craftsmen as a gratitude to God.

Our journey will then take us to the homes of some local craftsmen, where we will admire some of their work, such as the hand-carved traditional wooden gates, and the pottery. You will also be introduced to the most natural and ecological washing machine, Valtori – The Whirlpools of Maramures, the place where local women still go to wash their woolen, hard to handle rugs.

Romania is well known for its mountains, forests, beautiful landscapes, gorges, and waterfalls, and on our way back to Cluj we will stop to admire the beautiful landscape from Maramures.

One of the attractions that you will surely fall in love with is the last virgin forest in Maramures, a place that is still pure and untouched by humans, home to more than 10,000 species of animals and plants, and a paradise for any tourists that steps inside. Next, we will be climbing heights to admire the lovely hill villages, a beautiful scenery that will make you feel like in a Lord of the Rings setting.

My wife and I loved it! Maramures is such a beautiful area, it really does feel like traveling back in time. The village of Breb is simply stunning, the locals were very kind to us. We enjoyed a traditional meal and witnessed some of the local crafts such as wood carving and egg painting. Ioana was also very responsive and friendly and helped us with everything.
