Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum is an outdoor museum in the heart of Bucharest Romania, just near Herastrau Park. The ethnographic museum offers a panorama of Romania's erstwhile villages, consisting of old traditional houses gathered from all the regions of the country. The different architectural styles can provide you with a better understanding of the diversity of Romania one century ago. The historical areas: Moldova, Wallachia, Transylvania, Maramures, and Dobrodja, even if a majority population formed by Romanians inhabited them, the sociological difference was noticeable. The open-air museum, one of the unique museums in Bucharest and Romania, recreates the atmosphere of the traditional Romanian villages, reconstructed here completely with churches, a windmill, and a watermill and animated by many folk arts and crafts. This way, Bucharest Village Museum creates a gateway in the middle of the city, however far from the urban noise and futuristic buildings, right next to Herastrau Lake and to one of the largest parks in Bucharest, King Michael I Park.
Village Museum in Bucharest was opened in 1936, having 33 complexes of folk architecture. Currently, its size and number increased to 123 complexes, 363 monuments, and mobile assets with a total of more than 50 000 objects.
Dimitrie Gusti Museum has been through two significant happenings: the fire from the 5th of September 1997 and the fire from 20th of February 2002 that have damaged a great number of monuments. The monuments have been restored in quite a short period of time with the help of sponsors.
Muzeul National al Satului "Dimitrie Gusti" has to display a range of traditional collections. All the exhibits are authentic, genuine samples of architecture, specific to various rural areas of the country, arranged according to the historical era and positioning. The oldest house here dates from the 17th century, while the newest was originally built in the 19th century.
The Village Museum (Muzeul Satului) has to display a permanent collection that contains the representative buildings, monuments, and artifacts from the most significant ethnographic areas in Romania. You can also see the Museum Collections – the Patrimonial and document collections or the Contemporary folk art gallery that features the creations of skilled craftsmen that also have folk pieces that you can buy. At the outdoor museum, you can also find "La Bariera", a traditional inn where you can enjoy some traditional Romanian food and wine, cooked as in the countryside cuisine. The inn has its origins in Valenii de Munte, a region that connects Prahova Valley with Buzaului Valley and dates back from the 19th century.
During the summer, the museum organizes cooking classes celebrating in this way different popular ceremonies inspired by village lives. On these special days, the museum, you can experience Romanian food and village life with music, people wearing traditional clothes, and the joy of a simple life.
