Things to do in Brasov

Brasov is definitely one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Romania. With traces of human activity dating as back as 9500 BCE in the Neolithic age.  The city was founded in 1234 by the Teutonic Knights. The city is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in Romania, the Carpathian mountains, and was the home of both Germans and Romanians. Over the years, various cultures and styles mixed together and made the city into what it is today - a medieval jewel near brasov.

1. Visit the narrowest street in Romania – Strada Sforii

One of the narrowest streets in Europe, its existence is known from the 18th century as a simple corridor to help firefighters work. The interesting fact is that Strada Sforii was included by The Huffington Post in its list of the narrowest streets in the world. If you visit Brasov, don't miss this.

 

Tip: You'll want to take a photo. If you are careful you can spot the Brasov sign through the small space between the buildings around the street.

 

 

2. Take panoramic pictures of the city from the Black Tower or from the White Tower

These towers were part of the city walls, built as a defense mechanism. You can enjoy the view of the Carpathian Mountains and Brasov old town from here.

The black and the white tower, were built as a defense mechanism against the invading forces. The White Tower was built between 1460 and 1494, and the Black Tower was built between 1819 and 1820.

Tip: The Black Tower is actually white as well. It is home to a large collection of artifacts made by the many craftsmen of Brasov.

 

 

3. Take an adventure trip in Parc Aventure or relax in Aquatic Paradise

Tip: If you’re an adrenaline addict you can choose the black route from Parc Aventura, where you'll find yourself as high as 20 meters above the ground.

 

4. Practice winter sports in Poiana Brasov

A favorite for winter sports and spa treatments, it's a must-visit in Brasov city. A famous destination filled with tourists who come here both for the winter sports as well as for its spa treatments.

 

Tip: You can enjoy your time here even in the summertime. There are tubing and zorbing tracks.

 

Poiana Brasov is a neighborhood of Brasov and a Romanian ski resort.

 

5. Attend ”Sarbatoarea Junilor” (Juni Celebration)

  • Romanian Juni:

On the first day of Easter, the Juni Celebration begins and lasts for a whole week. A group of horsemen who ride each year in order to preserve the old traditions. Junii Brașovului is a unique traditional festival celebrated in Brașov, Romania. It consists of a parade of young men on horseback, dressed in colorful costumes, showcasing various customs and rituals symbolizing youth, virility, and the changing of seasons. During this event, they proclaim The Resurrection and choose their leader for the next year.

 

Junii din Șcheii Brașovului and Brașovul vechi is a group of horsemen from Șcheii Brașov.

 

6. Visit the Bats Cave

A unique attraction, this cave is home to rare species and offers a chance for a day tour near Brasov.

This cave that looks straight out of a Batman film is a location that attracts thousands of tourists each year. Its name comes from the vast number of bat colonies that live in its depths, some of them belonging to rare species.

 

Tip: You don’t need to have any special equipment when visiting the cave, just a flashlight. The only thing you need to do is to wear something to protect your clothes to avoid getting dirty due to the clay or the traces of guano found inside the cave.

7. Visit Dracula's Castle

Explore the myths and history of castle Draculas, Bran Dracula's Castle, and Castle Peles.
We simply just can't leave this off our list. Bran Castle owes its fame to the myth created around Bram Stoker's character, Count Dracula. A long time ago, the castle was the royal residence of Queen Marie of Romania. It houses furniture items of inestimable value, items of clothing of Queen Mary of Romania, weapons, pottery, armor and other valuable items.

Tip: Through the small windows of the castle you can see the beautiful village surrounded by mountains. On a hot summer day, you can stay at the terrace in the garden and enjoy an ice cream or a cold drink.

 

8. Visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary

This bear sanctuary is home to brown bears and offers a chance to adopt a bear. Near the city of Brasov, you'll find the largest bear reservation in Europe, hosting more than 70 brown bears and one Asian black bear brought from Texas.

 

Tip: On its 10-year anniversary, the foundation opened the Teddy Bear Museum, where people can donate Teddy Bears from all over the world. The museum can brag with two giant teddy bears that came all the way from London, in the honor of the second child the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate. Oh, and by the way, did we mention that you can adopt a bear? Yes. A live one.

 

9. Relax in the center of Brasov

Enjoy the local guide's suggestions and eat in Brasov, exploring the Piața Sfatului Council Square and Rope Street

Brasov has its own Hollywood-like sign on a mountain nearby, and it is best observed from the Brasov Council Square. After an exhausting trip on the streets of Brasov, the best thing to do is just sit down and relax.

 

Tip: You don't necessarily have to sit on a bench. You can sit on the edge of the fountain or go in one of the many cafes and restaurants from the Boulevard.
