Haferland Week transforms the idyllic region between Rupea and Sighișoara every summer into a lively celebration of Saxon culture and tradition. Launched in 2012 by Michael Schmidt and Peter Maffay, this festival has grown into Romania’s largest event dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Transylvanian Saxons.
Under the High Patronage of Prince Philip von und zu Liechtenstein and with the Royal Family of Romania, the festival invites visitors to immerse themselves in fortified church tours, medieval battles, traditional Saxon dances, organ concerts, and craft exhibitions. Children and adults can join interactive workshops and taste organic Saxon cuisine in a truly immersive cultural experience.
The 13th edition of Haferland Week took place between July 31 – August 3, 2025, bringing life and tradition to ten Saxon villages in Transylvania, including Criț, Viscri, Saschiz, Meșendorf, and Archita. Under the theme “Neighborhood Traditions”, the festival celebrated the cultural bonds between Saxons and their neighbors through organ concerts, folk dances, fortified church visits, exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, and traditional balls, all with free admission. More than just a cultural showcase, Haferland Week has become a model for sustainable rural tourism, where restored guesthouses, crafts, and authentic gastronomy highlight the living heritage of Transylvania.

Attracting 10,000 visitors from Germany, Austria, the United States, and beyond, Haferland Week offers a rare opportunity to step back in time and explore Saxon traditions in their pristine rural setting. With free admission to all events, this enchanting journey through the heart of Transylvania is open to everyone.
While the exact dates for 2026 aren’t yet official, expectations remain high. Historically held in late July to early August, the 14th edition will almost certainly continue the tradition: free cultural programming across Saxon villages, focus on craftsmanship, music, storytelling, workshops, and village life. Community involvement, hospitality, and immersive experiences will remain at its core—reinforcing Haferland as both a cultural revival and rural tourism driver.
