Self-drive tours imply a certain amount of driving from you every day. At the end of the day, you could feel a little tired. On the other hand, self-drive tours give you the freedom to explore at your own pace and even add other stops but the ones in the itinerary. A guided tour means no driving for you, just traveling comfortably in a car. In addition, a guide knows a lot of hidden spots that you might not discover on your own.

Foreign tourists are used to the frequent presence of highways. In Romania, there are only a few highways as the traffic modernization process is in progress. The most common types of roads are European, national and county roads in rural areas. Caution and driving within legal limits ensure safety on the roads in Romania.

Citizens of the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and many other countries do not need a visa for short tourism stays in Romania. Romania is an EU member (and as of 2025, part of the Schengen Area) which allows visa-free entry for many nationalities. Tourists can typically remain in Romania for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa.

We recommend coming to Romania from April to October for sightseeing, but all the seasons have their beauty. For example, spring and autumn are pleasant for walking, summer is ideal for the Black Sea coast, and winter offers skiing in the mountains.

If you want an immersive experience in all that Romania has to offer, we suggest a 2-week itinerary. 10 days would cover the main sites, while 4 days would cover the best of Transylvania.

Romania’s public transport is usable but slow (old train network ~80 km/h), so renting a car or joining a tour is the best option for getting around.

Many Romanians – especially the younger generation – speak English and are eager to help tourists enjoy their stay. You should not worry about the language barrier when joining a guided tour as the guide handles communication at sightseeing, accommodation, restaurants and rural areas.

Romania has widespread free Wi-Fi (in hotels, cafes, etc.) and even boasts some of the world’s fastest internet speeds, making it easy to stay connected during your trip.

Romania is safe, and it ranks among Europe’s safest countries – though normal precautions against pickpockets (especially in crowds) are advised.

Petty theft (pickpocketing) and overcharging taxis are the main issues, so basic caution with belongings and insisting on taxi meters is recommended. Also, Bolt and Uber are a great alternative to taxis in urban areas.

Romania doesn’t require any shots beyond standard routine travel immunizations for visitors.

Tap water is generally safe to drink in Romanian cities (though it may be heavily chlorinated), while in rural areas some travelers prefer bottled water. Overall, food standards are high and drinks in reputable restaurants and hotels are safe.

Romania’s public healthcare is available but underdeveloped, so having travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any emergencies and ensure peace of mind.

Romania does not offer legal recognition for same-sex partnerships and social attitudes can be conservative, especially in rural areas. It’s generally a safe destination, but LGBTQ+ visitors often choose to travel discreetly and stick to more liberal urban areas.

Romania is generally quite affordable compared to Western Europe – offering good value for accommodation, food, and tours.

Romania’s currency is the Leu (RON) (it isn’t on the Euro). ATMs are plentiful in cities and credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s wise to carry some cash for small towns or rural areas where cards may not be usable.

Tipping around 10% at restaurants is customary if service is good, and it’s common to tip tour guides, drivers, or hotel staff (small amounts or ~10% of the tour price) as a thank you for good service.
