What Travelers Love about Romania Vacation Packages

Lee & Sarah – Transylvania Castles Tour

Me & my fiancée have just recently returned from our 4 days Transylvania Castles Tour of Romania, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We were accompanied by our very knowledgeable and expert guide George Buliga. George took the time to show us the best parts of Romania including places like Sibiu, Biertan, Sighisoara, Alba Iulia, Brasov etc. George also took the time to explain the history behind the towns and cities we visited; nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation throughout the tour was good, the 3 main hotels which are , The Atria, Hotel Mecure, Continental Forum, all had great rooms and offered lovely Continental breakfast with a variety to choose from. The tour itself was at a good pace you never felt that you were rushed and got decent time to see places between visits. A big thank you to George Buliga for showing us his great country.

Nikki – Halloween in Transylvania Tour

This tour was on my bucket list as Halloween is my fav time of year, plus I love the vampire theme, but aside from that this tour was one of, if not THE best guided tours I’ve ever been on & I’ve been on at least 10. Romania is spectacular, SO beautiful! The itinerary was FAB, plus I saw all things Dracula, where Vlad was born, where he was entombed, the castle, the Carpathian mountains, but also I think what made the trip so special was our guide, Laurentiu. He was fantastic, he’s from Romania, grew up there, so much fascinating knowledge, was funny & easy on the eyes too! 😉 But not only that he was always calm, cool & collected, very articulate speech & never rushed, made 4 a really relaxing & pleasant tour, he is just the best!

Macarena - Adventure trip to Transylvania

Our Tour guide Tavi was EXCEPTIONAL. Full of knowledge and facts and going extra mile to make sure we were getting the best experience from the tour. I am still speechless from what I have seen and will defo recommend it. My group was absolutely amazing, Jo, Chris and Claire. First Solo holidays and felt totally safe and looked after. Easy way to arrange whatever was needed even out of the tour. Looking forward to book my next one!

Sarah - Dracula beyond the legend tour

Such an amazing trip! We can’t stop talking about our guide Gelu. He really made the trip. We felt like we were leaving our best behind when it was all over. I could write a book on what I learned from Gelu. Any question I asked he could answer. Romania is a beautiful country, lacking nothing. We stayed in wonderful hotels and ate great food everyday. I have zero complaints & highly recommend this tour & Rolandia & Gelu. The tour company was always responsive, friendly & accommodating. It was my first trip to Europe & Romania did not disappoint. It’s a busy trip but so worth it to see & learn the vast & rich history of Romania.

Most Popular Destinations in Romania

Transylvania

Beyond the Dracula myths, Transylvania charms with medieval towns like Sibiu and Sighișoara, UNESCO churches, and traditional villages where life hasn’t changed in centuries. Hidden among its forests and rolling hills are Saxon fortresses, quiet hiking trails, and warm local hospitality.

Bucovina

Known for its UNESCO-painted monasteries, Bucovina is a land of deep tradition and natural beauty. Here, time slows in fairytale villages, forested hills, and family-run farms where crafts like egg-painting and weaving are still part of daily life.

Maramureș

Maramureș is Romania’s time capsule: wooden churches, carved gates, horse-drawn carts, and authentic village life. Locals still celebrate age-old customs, offering visitors a rare glimpse into a living, breathing European tradition.

Danube Delta

Europe’s last wild wetland, the Danube Delta is a peaceful maze of waterways, fishing villages, and birdlife. Accessible only by boat, it’s a nature lover’s dream and a chance to unplug in one of the continent’s quietest corners.

Bucharest

Bucharest surprises with its blend of Belle Époque elegance, communist landmarks, and creative energy. Discover tucked-away churches, bookshop cafes, and buzzing nightlife—all in a capital reinventing itself with every step.

Carpathian Mountains

The Carpathians offer Romania’s wildest landscapes—dense forests, hidden trails, and rich wildlife. Meet shepherds, hike to glacial lakes, or just soak in the silence of alpine meadows in this untouched natural haven.

Traveler Types

The solo explorer

Romania is a safe space for both men and women travelling alone. We recommend joining a shared small group tour for exploring Romania. The guides will make it easy for you to feel part of the group right from the start.

The culture lover

Romania is a dream for travelers passionate about history and heritage. With visible layers from Roman, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Communist eras, every region tells a different story. Both our shared and private tours are culture-focused so all you have to do is choose the best option for you.

The family adventurer

Romania is full of experiences that kids and parents will enjoy together. From castles and salt mines to wildlife sanctuaries and soft hiking trails, there’s something exciting for every age. Plus, accommodation and guides are child-friendly, making it an easy and safe destination for families.

The romantic traveler

Whether you're on your honeymoon or simply escaping together, Romania offers magical backdrops for romance. Think of fairytale castles, quiet mountain cabins, wine tastings, and sunset strolls through charming villages. It’s the perfect setting for couples who want both beauty and adventure.

Best Time to Visit Romania

Summer

July and some part of August are the hottest months in Romania, with temperatures rising to 33 degrees Celsius during the day, but they can even reach 40 degrees in big cities. These months are preferred for the Black Sea Coast, remote villages or Carpathian Mountains trails. June and the end of August are ideal months though. In summer, you can take part in fruit picking in the orchards or preparing preserves for winter, including pickled vegetables.

Fall

September and October are warm and sunny with some rainy days from time to time. But the temperature is perfect for long tours in the country. The autumn colors are beautiful in all the regions of the country, and the tranquility of the nature will give you a sense of relaxation and freedom. Local activities include in-house making of wine and țuică which you can take part in and taste it first-hand.

Winter

Winter in Romania is a must! Spending Christmas in Maramures is an experience of a lifetime. The pre-Christmas preparations, the sweet smells and the flavors spread throughout the house will go right to your soul. The traditions are still alive in the villages so you will be part of them during your stay. If you are more of an adventurer, Carpathian Mountains offer some good quality slopes for winter sports. Ultimately, you can tour the Christmas markets in Bucharest, Sibiu, Brasov and Craiova if you just want to enjoy Santa’s spirit and mulled wine.

Spring

Spring in Romania has the best temperatures for traveling during the day, but the nights can be chilly. Also, rainy clouds can gather in the sky in no time! Spring breaks tend to get crowded in touristic spots, but you will not experience the overpacking Europe is used to. April and May are warm months, ideal for walking the streets of medieval towns or vibrant cities.

What Our Travelers Ask about Romania Vacation Packages

Self-drive tours imply a certain amount of driving from you every day. At the end of the day, you could feel a little tired. On the other hand, self-drive tours give you the freedom to explore at your own pace and even add other stops but the ones in the itinerary. A guided tour means no driving for you, just traveling comfortably in a car. In addition, a guide knows a lot of hidden spots that you might not discover on your own.

Foreign tourists are used to the frequent presence of highways. In Romania, there are only a few highways as the traffic modernization process is in progress. The most common types of roads are European, national and county roads in rural areas. Caution and driving within legal limits ensure safety on the roads in Romania.

All our Romania vacation packages (except for the self-drive tours) include a guide who is also the driver. Sometimes, we handle hiring an external driver, especially for large groups. A good local guide can handle the driving and reveal hidden gems beyond the usual tourist path, and this makes it worth it.

Transylvania’s Castles & Medieval Towns

  • Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) – Gothic architecture and legends.
  • Peleș Castle – Stunning neo-Renaissance palace in the mountains.
  • Corvin Castle – One of the largest medieval castles in Europe.
  • Sighișoara – A UNESCO-listed citadel and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler.
  • Brașov & Sibiu – Beautiful Saxon towns full of charm, towers, and cobblestone streets.

Painted Monasteries of Bucovina: UNESCO-listed Voroneț, Sucevița, Moldovița – Unique 15th-16th century monasteries covered in vibrant exterior frescoes.

Maramureș Wooden Churches & Traditions: Step back in time with local artisans, ancient cemeteries, and wooden churches like Bârsana – a deeply authentic experience of Romania’s rural soul.

Danube Delta: A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – Europe’s wildest wetland and birdwatcher’s paradise. Ideal for boat trips, fishing villages, and unplugging in nature.

Bucharest: Eclectic architecture, vibrant cafes, and the massive Palace of the Parliament. Don’t miss the Old Town for nightlife and history.

Carpathian Mountains: Perfect for hiking, wildlife watching, and scenic drives like the Transfăgărășan Road, dubbed “the best driving road in the world” by Top Gear.

We made sure not to miss any of the popular attractions in our tours and even added some authentic experiences.

Romania offers rich adventure and nature experiences, from Carpathian Mountain hikes to Danube Delta wildlife. A custom Romania vacation package can be focused on nature-based activities that you love.

Citizens of the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and many other countries do not need a visa for short tourism stays in Romania. Romania is an EU member (and as of 2025, part of the Schengen Area) which allows visa-free entry for many nationalities. Tourists can typically remain in Romania for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa.

We recommend coming to Romania from April to October for sightseeing, but all the seasons have their beauty. For example, spring and autumn are pleasant for walking, summer is ideal for the Black Sea coast, and winter offers skiing in the mountains.

If you want an immersive experience in all that Romania has to offer, we suggest a 2-week itinerary. 10 days would cover the main sites, while 4 days would cover the best of Transylvania.

Romania’s public transport is usable but slow (old train network ~80 km/h), so renting a car or joining a tour is the best option for getting around.

Many Romanians – especially the younger generation – speak English and are eager to help tourists enjoy their stay. You should not worry about the language barrier when joining a guided tour as the guide handles communication at sightseeing, accommodation, restaurants and rural areas.

Romania has widespread free Wi-Fi (in hotels, cafes, etc.) and even boasts some of the world’s fastest internet speeds, making it easy to stay connected during your trip.

Romania is safe, and it ranks among Europe’s safest countries – though normal precautions against pickpockets (especially in crowds) are advised.

Petty theft (pickpocketing) and overcharging taxis are the main issues, so basic caution with belongings and insisting on taxi meters is recommended. Also, Bolt and Uber are a great alternative to taxis in urban areas.

Romania doesn’t require any shots beyond standard routine travel immunizations for visitors.

Tap water is generally safe to drink in Romanian cities (though it may be heavily chlorinated), while in rural areas some travelers prefer bottled water. Overall, food standards are high and drinks in reputable restaurants and hotels are safe.

Romania’s public healthcare is available but underdeveloped, so having travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any emergencies and ensure peace of mind.

Romania does not offer legal recognition for same-sex partnerships and social attitudes can be conservative, especially in rural areas. It’s generally a safe destination, but LGBTQ+ visitors often choose to travel discreetly and stick to more liberal urban areas.

Romania is generally quite affordable compared to Western Europe – offering good value for accommodation, food, and tours.

Romania’s currency is the Leu (RON) (it isn’t on the Euro). ATMs are plentiful in cities and credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s wise to carry some cash for small towns or rural areas where cards may not be usable.

Tipping around 10% at restaurants is customary if service is good, and it’s common to tip tour guides, drivers, or hotel staff (small amounts or ~10% of the tour price) as a thank you for good service.
