The best time to visit Romania is late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October): warm, green or golden, and far quieter than midsummer. July and August are best for the mountains and the Black Sea coast but busier and pricier at the castles. October brings autumn colour and the Halloween season in Transylvania, while December offers Christmas markets and snowy Carpathian scenery.
Romania is a genuine year-round destination, but the right month depends entirely on what you want to do. A castle-and-towns trip is wonderful in spring; the high mountain roads only open in summer; and the Danube Delta is a birdwatcher’s dream in late spring. Here is how the seasons break down, plus a month-by-month table and timing by interest. Whatever the season, our Romania tours run year-round with local guides. How many days you need in Romania?
Romania by season
Spring (April–June) — the all-round sweet spot
Spring is arguably the best overall time to visit. The countryside is vivid green, wildflowers carpet the meadows of Transylvania and Maramureș, temperatures are comfortable (15–25°C by late spring) and the castles and old towns are not yet crowded. The painted monasteries of Bucovina look their best against fresh greenery, and the Danube Delta comes alive with migrating birds. April can still be cool and changeable; by June the weather is reliably warm.

Summer (July–August) — mountains, coast & festivals
Summer is warm to hot (often 28–35°C in the lowlands), perfect for hiking the Carpathians, driving the Transfăgărășan and Transalpina (only fully open in summer), and the Black Sea beaches. It is peak season, so Bran and Peleș castles are busy, accommodation costs more and popular tours fill up. Book ahead and start castle visits early in the day. Cities can feel hot, but the mountains stay pleasant.

Autumn (September–October) — colour & Halloween
Early autumn rivals spring: mild days, golden Carpathian forests and thinning crowds. September is still warm; October cools and brings spectacular foliage. Late October is Halloween season — Transylvania, and Bran Castle in particular, leans into the Dracula theme, and Rolandia’s Halloween tour and party sell out every year. Autumn is also harvest and wine season.

Winter (December–February) — markets & snow
Winter is cold (often below freezing, with snow in the mountains) and the high passes close, but it has its own magic: Brașov and Sibiu host atmospheric Christmas markets, the castles look enchanting under snow, and Poiana Brașov offers skiing. Days are short, so itineraries are more compact and focus on towns and accessible castles.

What to pack
Layers are key in every season — the mountains are cooler than the lowlands and evenings drop quickly. In spring and autumn bring a waterproof and a warm layer; in summer add sun protection and comfortable shoes for cobbled streets; in winter pack proper cold-weather gear. Good walking shoes are essential year-round for the castles and citadels.
