Detailed itinerary

Upon arrival, your driver will greet you and transfer you to your centrally located boutique hotel.

This is Bucharest, Romania’s capital city, where you will find contrasts at every step of the way. In Romanian, the city’s name is derived from the word “bucurie”, meaning “joy”, which is exactly what we’re promising you will feel at the end of your experience. The city is surrounded by legends about its founding, as well as about its name. One of those legends’ protagonists is Mircea the Elder, a legendary prince of Wallachia, who founded the city after he defeated the Turks in a difficult battle.

The remainder of the day is yours to explore or relax.

Overnight in Bucharest

Breakfast

Begin your day in Romania’s vibrant capital with a comprehensive Bucharest City Tour to showcase the city’s rich history and diverse architectural styles. Start your exploration with a visit to the Palace of the Parliament, one of the world’s largest and heaviest administrative buildings. This colossal structure, built during the communist regime under Nicolae Ceaușescu, is impressive, featuring a blend of Neoclassical and Socialist Realist architecture. The tour inside the palace will give you an insight into its vast halls, richly adorned with marble and gold leaf.

Next, make your way to the Village Museum, located in the lush surroundings of Herăstrău Park. This open-air ethnographic museum is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and offers a fascinating glimpse into Romanian rural life. Wander through the museum to see traditional houses, churches, and watermills from all regions of Romania, each structure brought here piece by piece and reassembled on site.

Conclude your city exploration in the charming Old Town of Bucharest. This area is a delightful mix of medieval, neoclassical, and modernist architectural styles and is bustling with life thanks to its numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants. Stroll through the cobblestone streets, visit the Stavropoleos Monastery with its exquisite carved stone and wood details, and perhaps relax at one of the many terraces to watch the world go by.

Overnight in Bucharest

Breakfast

Begin your day early as we depart from Bucharest, heading towards the Transfăgărășan Road, renowned for its dramatic scenery and thrilling engineering. This spectacular route stretches across the Carpathian Mountains, offering breathtaking views and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Please note that the Transfăgărășan Road is closed from the beginning of November until late June due to weather conditions. During these months, we will take an alternative route via the Olt Valley, which also boasts stunning landscapes and historical sites along the way, including the Cozia Monastery.

During the open season, we will wind our way up through the foothills and higher peaks along the Transfăgărășan, stopping at Bâlea Lake, a glacial lake situated over 2,000 meters in altitude. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views and a short walk in pristine surroundings.

After descending from the mountains, we will continue our journey to Sibiu, one of Transylvania’s most culturally vibrant cities. Upon arrival, we will check into our hotel, and then you will have time to explore Sibiu’s historical centre. Key sights include the Large Square, the Council Tower, and the famous Bridge of Lies.

You can spend your evening wandering through Sibiu’s charming streets.

Here, enjoy a traditional lunch prepared by local residents, providing another authentic taste of Transylvanian cuisine. This meal also offers an opportunity to engage with the community and learn more about their way of life, which remains closely tied to age-old traditions.

Post-lunch, explore the village on your own. Viscri’s charming streets and rustic setting make it ideal for leisurely walks and photography.

Once in Brașov, embark on a guided city tour to explore its rich history and beautiful architecture. Highlights include the Black Church, a stunning example of Gothic architecture and one of the largest churches in Romania, known for its impressive organ and collection of Anatolian carpets. Visit the Council Square, the heart of the old medieval Brașov, surrounded by colourful Baroque buildings bustling with activity.

After exploring the historical centre, you will take a short journey to the outskirts of Brașov for a bear-watching experience. Romania has a large population of wild brown bears, and this activity provides a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat from the safety of a specialised hide.

Following the bear-watching experience, return to Brașov for the evening. You may spend the rest of the day at leisure, perhaps enjoying dinner at one of the local restaurants or simply relaxing in the vibrant city centre’s atmosphere.

Tour the castle’s intriguing rooms and secret passages, uncovering its history as a strategic defence against the Ottoman Turks and its connection to Queen Marie of Romania, who used it as a royal retreat.

Continue your journey to Sinaia and visit Peleș Castle, a stunning example of German New-Renaissance architecture and a former summer residence of the Romanian royal family. The castle houses an impressive art collection renowned for its luxurious interior and significant cultural heritage. During your tour, explore the grand reception rooms and the royal library.

Next, head to Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni for a delightful wine-tasting experience. Savour some of Romania’s finest wines in the elegant surroundings of the castle, learn about the region’s winemaking traditions and enjoy the scenic views.
