Itinerary

transylvania castles tour

Detailed itinerary

Breakfast: included on all days except the first day

The Transylvania Castles Tour begins at 9:00 AM. Our guide will meet you at your accommodation (Airbnb, location) in Bucharest, and the trip will begin with a road trip to Sinaia. In Sinaia, you will come across one of Romania’s most prominent castles, Peles Castle. Peles is regarded as one of the world’s most spectacular castles by various publications due to its stunning design and picturesque environment. The Romanian Royal Family utilised it as a summer royal palace until the communist state took it over.

Important details to remember: Before booking your tour, keep in mind that Peles Castle is closed on Mondays and some Tuesdays. If you can only start your journey on Monday or Tuesday, the itinerary will be reversed.

The next stop is Bran, a lovely location near Brasov. Step into the magnificent Bran Castle, often known as Dracula’s Castle. Following Bram Stoker’s best-selling novel Dracula, the fame of Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle, captured the world’s attention. This is why Bran’s Halloween party is the world’s most popular!

The castle’s solitary image and the Gothic architecture typical of Transylvania’s Middle Ages formed an unbreakable bond with Vlad the Impaler. During your Transylvania castles tour, you’ll learn how Vlad the Impaler became associated with the Dracula legend.

Lunch: At your expense

Our exploration continues to Rasnov Fortress, a mediaeval stronghold located atop a hill. Enjoy breathtaking vistas and learn about the region’s rich history.

Rasnov, a mediaeval stronghold perched on a hill since the 14th century, is definitely worth your time.

After Rasnov, you will reach Brasov, which was founded by the same Teutonic Knights. Your city tour will begin at Council Square, the central square of the historic fortification. The highlights of the city tour include the Black Church, the Council Tower, the White and Black Towers, and Romania’s smallest street.

Dinner: At your expense

Evening: You have the freedom to spend the rest of your evening as you wish.

Overnight in Brasov

Breakfast: At the hotel

The second day of your Transylvanian trip begins at 9:00 a.m. with your departure from Brasov. Your journey leads you to medieval castles set among the region’s traditional Romanian villages, concluding with the fortification of the Rupea. It is renowned as one of Romania’s oldest archaeological sites, dating back to 5500 BC, and its existing structure has a venerable history of over 700 years. Among the fortress’s legends is that of Decebalus, the renowned Dacian ruler, who is said to have died behind its walls during the Second Dacian War in 106 AD.

While Transylvania’s citadels and castles are enchanted with their majesty, the tour also reveals the charm of ancient villages that have preserved Europe’s bygone lifestyle. On the way to Sighisoara, a stop in Viscri provides a look into the Saxon past, with mediaeval dwellings and culinary delights to explore. A delectable supper in the rural setting of Viscri enriches the adventure before going on, giving an immersive contact with Transylvania’s timeless appeal.

Lunch: Included at a local restaurant

Following lunch, we head to Sighisoara, where the historic citadel awaits. Upon arrival, immerse yourself in the labyrinthine alleyways lined with narrow cobblestone roads and vivid buildings. Sighisoara citadel has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, with continuous occupation dating back to the 13th century. The city pulses with life, with compelling street performances and exhibits by local artisans that reveal the secrets of historical crafts to eager visitors. Your investigation continues to the renowned Clock Tower, which provides panoramic views of the entire fortress from its heights. Notably, the ocher-coloured mansion in the citadel’s main square previously housed Vlad the Impaler until 1435; it now houses a café on the ground floor and the Museum of Weapons on the first story.

As the day comes to an end, you’ll retire to your accommodations in Sighisoara, ready to unwind and reflect on your activities amidst the historical splendour of this old city.

Dinner: At your expense

Evening: You have the freedom to spend the rest of your evening as you wish.

Overnight in Sighisoara

Breakfast: At the hotel

On the third day of your itinerary, the trip begins at 9:00 a.m., as the journey takes you to Biertan, home to Romania’s largest fortified church, surrounded by three tiers of protecting walls ornamented with six towers and three bastions. This charming village, with its rich tradition, has been on the UNESCO World Tradition list since 1993, inviting visitors to explore its historic past.

The next stop on your journey is Alba Iulia, a city rich in over two thousand years of Romanian history. Alba Iulia, which began as a Roman Fort and evolved into a medieval stronghold before becoming a beautiful stellar-shaped fortress with Vauban-style bastions, is a tribute to the nation’s enduring legacy.

Lunch: At your expense

After lunch, you will be absorbed by the magnificence of Corvin Castle, one of Transylvania’s most famous architectural treasures. This Gothic masterpiece, with towering spires decorated with stone-carved dragons, generates a sense of wonder reminiscent of fantasy stories. Known also as Hunyadi Castle, its fascination extends beyond its architectural splendour, echoing the heroic heritage of John Hunyadi, whose valour halted Ottoman assaults in Europe.

As the day comes to a close, your journey finishes in Sibiu, where a night of rest awaits in the embrace of a delightful boutique hotel, providing a haven within the enchanting surroundings of this historical city.

Dinner: At your expense

Evening: You are free to spend the rest of your evening as you please.

Overnight in Sibiu

Breakfast: At the hotel

The fourth and final day of your Transylvania tour begins with a delicious breakfast at the hotel, laying the groundwork for exploration in Sibiu. This city embodies the essence of Romania’s long history. At 9:00 a.m., you’ll set out on a guided tour of Sibiu’s cobblestone streets, which are reminiscent of an ancient German town, with its great centre plaza bordered by historic structures. On your way to the defensive walls, you’ll pass under the renowned Bridge of Lies, which is steeped in local folklore and mystery.

Lunch: At your expense

Depending on the season, your travel to Curtea de Arges Monastery may take you along the Transfagarasan highway or another path. Upon arrival, immerse yourself in the splendour of one of Romania’s most spectacular Orthodox churches, which is embellished with intricate construction and holds great religious significance. Explore the Necropolis, a resting place for the country’s respected Royal Family, while you learn about Romania’s royal legacy.
