The campaign #RomaniaInMovies has come to an end and in this last article, we’ll discover some of the most famous movies filmed in Romania.

 

We’ll start with Cold Mountain, a 2003 drama film, based on the novel of the same name by Charles Frazier. The film stars Jude Law as W. P. Inman, Nicole Kidman as Ada Monroe, Renée Zellweger as Ruby Thewes, Eileen Atkins as Maddy, Kathy Baker as Sally Swanger, Natalie Portman as Sara and more others.

 

The movie tells the story of three people in the 1860s in America, three people whose physical and psychological survival depends on their connection. First is the soldier of the Confederacy, Inman, who is wounded on the battlefield and returns to his beloved. On his way to Ada, he meets all kinds of people. In her return, Ada is no longer the delicate woman she was before the war. Ruby comes to the girl's aid, teaching Ada the laws of survival.

 

The movie was filmed almost entirely in Romania, around Bucharest and Brasov. The film was nominated for several awards, for Oscar, Golden Globe Awards and Bafta in 2004. Renée Zellweger won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Next on our list is The Brothers Bloom, a 2008 comedy film written and directed by Rian Johnson. The film features Rachel Weisz as Penelope Stamp, Adrien Brody as Bloom, Mark Ruffalo as Stephen, Rinko Kikuchi as Bang Bang, Maximilian Schell as Diamond Dog, Robbie Coltrane Maximillen "The Curator" Melville. The brothers Bloom are two crooks plotting one last shot. The victim is Penelope, an eccentric millionaire whose residence hides treasures that would ensure a peaceful life for the two brothers. Along with Bang Bang, an expert in explosives, the brothers Bloom implement their plan, which takes them through Eastern Europe.

 

The movie was filmed in Romania, Penelope's castle is the Peles Castle in Sinaia, Romania. Among the locations of the movie, there is also the Constanta Casino and the Port of Constanta in Romania.

 

Next on our list of famous movies filmed in Romania is The Whistleblower, a 2010 thriller film based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac, an American police officer. It stars Rachel Weisz as Kathryn Bolkovac, David Strathairn as Peter Ward, Nikolaj Lie Kaas as Jan, Anna Anissimova as Zoe, and Monica Bellucci as Laura Leviani.

 

The movie shows Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), a police officer from Nebraska, assigned in 2009 as a peacekeeper with the United Nations in Bosnia. The woman risks her job and her life to bring to light a huge sex scandal involving United Nations officials.

Most of the movie was filmed in Romania (Bucharest, the Carpathian Mountains - served as the backdrop for the Bosnian landscape).

 

Next on our list is The Keeping Room, a 2014 action thriller film starring Brit Marling as Augusta, Hailee Steinfeld as Louise, Muna Otaru as Mad, Sam Worthington as Moses, Amy Nuttall as Moll, Ned Dennehy as Caleb, and Nicholas Pinnock as Bill.

The movie tells the story of three Southern women, two sisters, and one slave. Left without men after the American Civil war, they must fight to defend their home and fight for themselves from two renegades, drunken and violent soldiers.

The film was shot entirely in Romania (Poenari village in Arges County, Bucharest).

It stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz, Robert Davi, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The story presents the mercenary group The Expendables, starting a conflict with the arm dealer Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), the co-founder of the group, who decides to destroy the team.

The movie was filmed in Bucharest, Romania. Kelsey Grammer won the Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Supporting Actor.

 

Last on the list of famous movies filmed in Romania is Hatfields & McCoys, a three-part 2012 television miniseries based on the Hatfield–McCoy feud. The film features Kevin Costner as William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, Bill Paxton as Randolph "Randall" McCoy, Tom Berenger as Jim Vance, Matt Barr as Johnson "Johnse" Hatfield, Jena Malone as Nancy McCoy, Sam Reid as Tolbert McCoy.

The film was shot entirely in Transylvania, Romania, just outside of Brașov with the Carpathians serving as the backdrop to create the atmosphere of Appalachians.
